Early Assessment Scan (12-18 weeks)

What is an early assessment scan?

This scan gives you information about the early stages of baby's development and is performed between 12 and 18 weeks of pregnancy.

What is the aim of this scan?

The aim of this scan is to confirm your date of delivery, identify the number of babies present and give you some reassurance about the early development of your baby.

Can I find out the sex of the baby?

No, it is too early to find out the sex of your baby. This can be done from 19 weeks onwards.

Do you always get a good view of the baby?

The accuracy of ultrasound depends on getting a good view of the baby. This may be difficult for the sonographer if there is increased maternal BMI, your bladder is not sufficiently full, or your LMP date is erroneous. We will try our best to tell you as much as we can from the scan.
