Flu Vaccinations

Influenza (commonly called `flu') is highly infectious, particularly in the workplace. It is spread by droplets in the air and on surfaces from person to person, often by coughing or sneezing.
A flu vaccination is the best way to protect yourself from the flu virus. However, the viruses change from year to year, so any immunity you've built up following one year's vaccination doesn't necessarily protect you against newer strains of the virus the following year.
To maintain the best possible immunity it's important to have a flu vaccination every year. Influenza tends to peak in the late autumn and winter months. Healthcare Now operates a vaccination program from October so that the vaccine has time to take effect properly before the winter sets in.
At only £20 per vaccine, Healthcare Now offers the most competitive price in Edinburgh and Fife.
Facts on the Flu Vaccine
- Influenza (the `flu') is caused by the influenza respiratory virus.
- It can be passed from person to person by a simple sneeze or cough or touching contaminated surfaces.
- People aged 65 years and older, or those with chronic medical conditions, are at most risk of developing complications from the flu virus, including pneumonia or hospitalisation.
- The `flu shot' contains killed virus and is normally administered with a needle in the arm, or sometimes with a nasal spray.
- Flu viruses change from year to year and the vaccine is updated accordingly, based on international surveillance and scientists' estimations about which types and strains of virus will circulate in any given year.
- The flu vaccines currently in use do not offer protection against avian (`bird') flu or swine flu but will give protection against other strains of influenza that may cause infection
